My previous mixed media and ceramic work is, for me, like the two-dimensional paintings in this exhibition, a necessary translation in visual terms of my intuitive processes. This creative production feels both urgent and exploratory.
For Self Scene, it became crucial to give form not only to the raw, vulnerable underbelly but also to its opposite: the public self, the self who must conform and perform in society, the self who’s invited, dresses up, inhabits a role, who edits her more authentic nature. The oversized elements in the exhibition and what each suggests—cage, armor, discomfort, exaggerated beauty—point to the overwhelming space this presentation self occupies and to the magnitude and essence of the struggle to meet hardwired expectations of the exterior self. The alchemy I am after is not the grain of sand that becomes the pearl, but, rather, the reverse—an undoing of the pearl, so to speak, back to the grit and truth of who I am, of who we are.
